Day 2 Hawaii

Empty shelves...

Thought we would wake up this morning to a full blown hurricane but, according to the news, it was slowing down and now wouldn’t hit until 2pm. We decided to have breakfast and go out for a couple of hours before the hurricane arrived. We went back to Safeway to get a few non perishable items just in case the power went off and we couldn’t cook anything. The shelves were looking pretty bare in places.

We went home for lunch, ready to stay home as we waited for the hurricane. Again it was delayed, so we decided to go out again to check out a few places that we wanted to visit, even though we couldn’t get into anything due to closures. Here we are outside the entrance to Pearl Harbour. Had a little walk around, couldn’t see much. The ships and submarine were only just visible in the background. There were half a dozen tourists doing the same thing. The place was closed and some areas sandbagged. I really wanted to do the submarine tour but now we will probably run out of time to be able to get back there, as we have lots to do and only 4 days left.

We then went up to the Punchbowl War memorial. By then it had started to rain but it was still warm. Again we couldn’t get in because it was closed due to the hurricane. We got some photos of the city. If you look closely you can see Diamond Head in the background.

Selfie... we didn’t have any tourists around to take a photo of all of us together (like at Pearl Harbour), so Lauren took a family selfie....

The big island and Maui have had some torrential rains up to 40 inches with bad flooding. Also had a dangerous wild fire whipped up with the high winds. We have been very lucky on Oahu. We have just heard that Hurricane Lane has now been down graded to a strong tropical storm which will last about another 48 hours. There are still high winds and flash flooding warnings and nothing will be open tomorrow. It will be Sunday before we can get into any of the sights.  The news is now showing fires on our island with 100 acres having been burnt so far.  If weather permits, tomorrow we will do an island drive....
